My over 30 years as a literacy educator has given me countless ways to teach reading to all children.

For the "ready to read" child:

I know how to teach the child who is ready and eager to learn to read.
I focus on alphabet knowledge:
.  Identify and name letters of the alphabet.
.  Learn sounds for the letters.
.  Rhymes and matching initial or final sound letters with pictures.

Phonics:
.  "Sound out" or "Tap Out" the letters to read the words.
.  Read books with words on their instructional level.
.  Become a more fluent reader
.  Write words and sentences to create books to read alone or to members of the family.

Vocabulary and Comprehension:

.  Read and understand what is read
.  Be able to answer literal and more interpretive comprehension questions.

For the reluctant reader:

.  Discover what his/her interests are and then find books on that student's interest level as well as instructional level.
.  Exciting and high interest websites and apps for tablets that will encourage reading
.  Provide a safe and supportive setting where students know they can "try that" and not be afraid of getting the wrong answer.

For the accelerated reader:

.  Provide texts that are challenging to read and then participate in higher order discussions.
